Pelitena Domos

Domos-Domo is an ancient Greek word that translates as house and more specifically ‘building with stone. This word remains still in modern Greek language as a synthetic (ex. Poleodomos means Town planner /Architect.)

Pelitena Domos is a unit of houses/accommodations in the traditional settlement of Aroniadika in Kythira island.

It consists of a newly renovated two-floor tiled house with 3 arches/vaults and courtyard on the ground floor,  an apartment at the first floor with 2 comfortable bedrooms and verandas, and a comfortable bright detached house with 2 ensuite bedrooms and its own garden.

The two-floor building, which was completely renovated in 2021, consists of 3 arches /vaults at least 150 years old, while the 1st floor was built at the beginning of the 20th century.

The original elements and architecture of the house such as the thick stone walls, the traditional Vaults /(arches) on the ground floor, the old fireplace, the inner drawers, the large external stone staircase and the porolith/tufa stone openings of the house, have been fully preserved and restored to their authentic shape.

On the 1st floor, an original Kythera wooden ceiling was reconstructed.

The detached house is in the garden of the old house, complementing and fully harmonizing with the environment, offering privacy and an excellent view of the surrounding hills.

What is
a Volto/Vault?

Volto is an oblong stone arch construction with excellent protection from a potential earthquake.
The thickness of the walls is around 60-70 cm with stone and soil as its main materials, while for the dome arch the materials used are mainly sand and lime.

To maintain the Vault moisture-proof, they used to apply a special black soil with water as its main ingredient once per year. The Vault has a very few openings (usually 1 small window and 1 door) so that there is a balanced and refreshing temperature within it throughout the year, without major variations between winter and summer time.

But how did they manage to find all these needed materials? Before the building of a new construction, they should have access to water, either by creating a cistern for catching and store the rainwater or, more commonly, to dig a well. Remarkably the digging for a cistern or a well was offering the main constructing material, the stones.

Πολλές φορές έκαιγαν και ασβεστοκάμινο για την παρασκευή ασβέστη.
A characteristic of wealthy families at the time, where the number of vaults their house had. The more the vaults, the wealthier the family was.

«Meraki» in Greek, means love and care for what you do. Attention to detail, Respect to local architecture, Natural materials, and colors, traditional but comfortable furniture. Overall, it is a house that respects and highlights tradition while having all modern comforts and amenities.

The Pelitena Domos house is conveniently located in Aroniadika, at the NE side of the island and has an unbroken view to fields and nature and at Cavo Malea (Laconia’s south cape on the Peloponnese). Your private parking is only 100 meters from the house.
